Leaders of 19 Latin American parties will ask to apply measures against Russia similar to those of the European Union

Nineteen leaders of political parties and organizations that belong to the Union of Latin American Parties (UPLA), meeting this March 2, condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and agreed to ask Latin American countries to adopt the same measures with respect to Russia as provided by the European Union, mainly the closure of air spaces and the cancellation of current trade agreements.

The meeting was held in a virtual format and they resolved to demand a ceasefire and a ceasefire of the Russian occupation; for which they will request, by means of a formal note to the Secretary General of the OAS, that said organization be the organizer of the mission.

This group of political leaders agreed to promote a face-to-face peace mission in Ukraine with the participation of the authorities of the democratic parties of Latin America.

They will also request, through a formal note to His Holiness Pope Francis, that he be an active convener for said peace mission, inviting the leaders of the free world to participate in it.

Delegates from the Union of Latin American Parties (UPLA), leaders of political parties from Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela participated in the meeting. Participating for Ecuador were the national president of the Christian Social Party, Alfredo Serrano, and the president of the Creating Opportunities movement, Guido Chiriboga.

This group of political leaders will ask the highest authorities of the Latin American countries that, as far as possible, the same measures ordered by the European Union be adopted with respect to Russia, mainly, the closure of air spaces and the cancellation of current trade agreements. This, until the fire ceases and the illegitimate occupation of Ukraine.

They also resolved to simultaneously organize and convene, in all Latin American countries, citizen mobilizations at the gates of the diplomatic representations of Russia, in order to demand, in a peaceful manner, the cessation of the attacks and the immediate withdrawal of the troops. of the Ukrainian territory

Promoting in the Parliaments of each country resolutions condemning the invasion that Russia is carrying out with respect to Ukraine, and recognizing the autonomy and self-determination of said nation, is another of the agreements of the political leaders.

Finally, they resolved to demand that Latin American left-wing organizations and their governments condemn Russia’s actions and demand the immediate restoration of constitutional order in Ukraine. (I)
