La Comuna and La Gasca, neighborhoods of Quito affected by flood, try to recover a month after the tragedy

about what was a ecuavolley court, between José Berrutieta and Antonio Herrera streets, in the north center of Quito, a gigantography with the names and photos of the victims of the flood registered on January 31, 2022. There are 27 names on the poster, however, according to the latest report from the capital city municipality, they were 28 people who lost their lives.

Under the canvas there are several roses that were placed by relatives and friends who improvised a tribute in the only mesh metal that withstood the force of the natural disaster that wiped out everything else in the sports center. Now, at ground zero of the disaster, they work several masons in the recovery of the walls washed away by the flood.

Cesar Lugmana works on the reconstruction of a wall located at the north end of the ecuavóley court. His sister’s house suffered damage to its structure, the wax was lost, as well as the retaining wall that divided the private land from the field built on a ravine.

The walls that were not destroyed they maintain the mark of the mud that exceeded two meters in height. The bent doors were reinstalled, while new ones are being built. This – according to the neighbors who prefer to keep their identity confidential due to reprisals – they have had to place in their homes to guard against crime. “Yes before they got into the houses, now with more ease because our houses are uncovered”, said Edison, one of the inhabitants of the sector.

Help has indeed arrived, although not for everyone. Manuel Creole, 62 years old, lives under the mountain of the ecuavóley court, in one of the houses that received the impact of the landslide. After thanking the sand, blocks and cement that the Municipality of Quito gave him, he regrets that support has not arrived in appliances that were damaged. Her kitchen, washing machine, televisions, as well as her daughter’s beds and refrigerator are useless and they did not receive the help offered. “I still have faith that the mayor will come with the help, because he himself told me ‘I’m going to bring you the things you lost,’” she added.

“The food, thank God, they have collaborated with us, I have no reason to deny that,” emphasized Manuel, who has been unemployed for years due to a leg injury; he worked as a bricklayer. Now he, together with his relatives, rebuilds the entrance to his house, while expects to receive the appliances offered. In the meantime, he uses a kitchenette that a relative lent him.

La Gasca manages another reality. This neighborhood was affected, however the structures were not as affected as La Comuna, especially the avenue with the same name.

The commercial premises reopened and everyday life returned to the streets, Few walls bear the mark of the desperate hours that were experienced with the flood. The images they shared on social networks, dragging vehicles, trees and people They will remain in the memory that the inhabitants of the north center of the capital try to forget.

For their part, the municipal authorities assure that the broken the roof, that collapsed on January 31, is located under monitoring, as well as several streams with risk for the inhabitants of surrounding areas. (I)
