The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will consider Ukraine’s request for urgent financial assistance. The World Bank (WB) is currently preparing a $3 billion support package, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and WB Group President David Malpass said in a joint statement.
According to the text of the statement, Ukraine’s request for emergency funding may be considered by the IMF Board of Directors as early as next week. A $3 billion support package will be made available in the coming months, with a fast track of at least $350 million in budget support could be approved next week, with the next $200 million tranche going to rapid support for health and education.
The Ukrainian authorities requested emergency funding from the International Monetary Fund on February 26.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”
In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
