A call for help made from the cell phone of one of the passengers allowed the rescue of 21 people adrift in the Mataje River, northern border of Esmeraldas, on the night of this Tuesday, March 1.

The travelers, between adults and children, were transported in a boat-type boat that was shipwrecked in the Tambillo sector, in the Ancón de Sardinas bay, in the San Lorenzo canton, confirmed the North Operations Command (Coopno).

After five days adrift, a boat that left Esmeraldas with three fishermen was rescued in Colombia

“People were left adrift in the water and some swam to the shores of the mangrove,” said one of the survivors.

Others grabbed suitcases, wood from the seats of the boat and plastic fuel tanks, so as not to drown in the Mataje River, which is wide as it approaches the binational maritime border with Colombia.

Personnel and boats from the San Lorenzo 11th Marine Infantry Battalion and the Limones naval checkpoint (Eloy Alfaro) went to the rescue of the survivors, in the dark of night.

After saving their lives, they were taken to the Tambillo and San Lorenzo del Pailón campus to assess their health status. Those who arrived in San Lorenzo were transferred in an ambulance to the Divina Providencia basic hospital, in this border jurisdiction.

The Coopno has not reported any more missing or drowned in this case. Residents of Palma Real, Tambillo, Ancón de Sardinas and Candelilla de la Mar (Colombia) only travel by speedboat or passenger or cargo boat, because this border area does not have roads or bridges due to the breadth of rivers and estuaries.

Peruvian fishermen who were missing were found off the coast of Santa Elena

The Ecuadorian Navy has recommended that they use life jackets, navigation lights and communication equipment, but most do not comply with these recommendations.

In another case, Navy personnel and lifeguards from the Esmeraldas Fire Department rescued the body of Kléver Mejía Tenorio, 16, who drowned while bathing in the sea in front of the Las Palmas spa, where he had arrived with his mother. and an aunt on Monday February 28 for the carnival holiday.
