Over 160 Nobel Prize winners have signed a petition condemning the Russian authorities for conducting a military operation in Ukraine. The actions of the Russian troops in circulation are called an “invasion”, as a result of which “a wall is being built between Russia and the world,” Novaya Gazeta reports.
The special operation in the Ukrainian territories “tarnished Russia’s international reputation for decades to come,” the Nobel laureates say. According to them, “Ukrainian military, Russian military and Ukrainian civilians, including children,” are dying. With this, the Russian Federation violates the UN Charter and the Budapest Memorandum, which guaranteed the inviolability of its borders to Ukraine in 1994, the awardees continue.
A military solution “will become an obstacle” to the development of the Russian economy and “a source of hardship for its population,” the appeal said. The sanctions that the West has imposed on Moscow since February 24 “will limit the freedom of movement around the world of talented and hardworking Russians.”
The Nobel laureates write that they reacted harshly to “military actions and the denial by President Putin of the very legitimacy of the existence of Ukraine.”
“We call on the Russian government to withdraw troops from Ukraine,” the signatories emphasize.
On the morning of February 24, President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia was launching a “military operation” in the Donbass to guarantee protection to the inhabitants of the LDNR and to “denazify” and “demilitarize” Ukraine. It should be noted that Russia has not officially declared war on Ukraine, and the actions of Russian servicemen in the media, in accordance with the requirement of Roskomnadzor, are required to be called a special operation.
