Today, 43% of Russians approve of the death penalty – since 2009, the number of supporters of this measure has decreased by 13 percentage points. This is reported by SuperJob, citing the results of the survey.

According to respondents, such a measure can be not only a punishment, but also serve to prevent crime.

37% are against the death penalty, talking about possible judicial errors and the principles of humanism.

Supporters of the death penalty among respondents older than 45 are 1.5 times more than among younger citizens: 55% versus 36% among respondents under 34 years of age. Men approve of capital punishment more often than women (48% versus 34%, respectively).

The survey was conducted on February 26-28, 2022 among 1,600 people who are part of the economically active population of Russia over 18 years old.

Earlier, ex-Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said against the background of the suspension of Russia’s membership in the Council of Europe and PACE that this “besides, this is also a good opportunity to restore a number of important institutions to prevent especially serious crimes in the country.”

“Like the death penalty for the most dangerous criminals, which, by the way, is actively used in the United States and China,” he said.
