Now the Russians cannot participate in international competitions, and this is unfortunate, but in the current situation it is really better for them not to go abroad. This statement was made by the President of the All-Russian Federation of Rhythmic Gymnastics Irina Viner-Usmanova, she is quoted by RBC Sport.
According to Viner-Usmanova, “provocations against Russian athletes abroad are now possible, so the recommendation of the IOC not to allow Russian athletes to participate in international competitions is the right step.”
“This is the right decision to insure our athletes. They should not go to competitions now, ”Viner-Usmanova added. She also noted that Russian athletes could compete in “friendly countries”.
Recall that on February 28, the International Olympic Committee recommended that international sports federations and competition organizers not allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in competitions because of the situation in Ukraine.
Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”
In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
