Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will not be able to visit Geneva and take part in the session of the UNHRC and the Conference on Disarmament. According to the Russian embassy in Switzerland, the visit of the Russian minister was canceled due to the ban on the flight of his aircraft in the airspace of a number of EU countries.

“The visit of Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov to Geneva was canceled due to an unprecedented ban on the flight of his aircraft in the airspace of EU countries,” the Russian diplomatic mission said on Twitter.

Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones. Many countries closed their airspace to Russia against the backdrop of a special operation in Ukraine, and on February 27, the foreign ministers of 27 EU countries approved the complete closure of airspace for Russian aircraft. Russia responded by closing its skies to aircraft from 36 countries.
