Eight policemen were injured in the demonstrations on Tuesday

Eight wounded policemen left the first day of mobilizations in Ecuador against the alleged reforms of the Government and in demand of the freezing of fuel prices, the Ministry of Government reported in a statement released this Wednesday.

The injured agents were registered in the provinces of Pichincha (five) and Cotopaxi (three), indicated in the letter released by the General Secretariat of Communication.

“In an effort to rebuild calm, the National Police was attacked with cobblestones taken from the square, to use them as projectiles and explosive devices, having to designate specialized servers to handle these devices to carry out controlled detonation and thus deter the danger from the rest of the uniformed and citizens present in the place, “he said.

He explained that in view of the acts of violence evidenced in the Historic Center, the protesters were dispersed through the progressive use of force.

The Ministry reiterated that all the actions carried out by the National Police focused “on maintaining citizen security and public order, respecting the right to free expression and protest.”

Precisely a violent clash between protesters and police officers in Quito, in the historic center where the Presidency is located, marked Tuesday’s day of social protests in Ecuador, which left some 37 detainees and had several epicenters, but none like the one in the capital. .

The setting was the historic Plaza de Santo Domingo, the place where the protesters converged after a peaceful march of less than two kilometers that had been called by unions, unions and social groups.

“In all parts of Ecuador the demonstrations have been peaceful. This is the only outbreak of violence throughout the day,” said the Minister of Government, Alexandra Vela, on Tuesday at a press conference in which the Government took stock of the day.

And he accused of the outbreak of “acts of vandalism” a group that he called a “Guevarista group”, some “fifty young people dressed in black with green backpacks” who were at the end of the march.

Upon entering the square, according to the minister, the group began to provoke the police and throw stones at the agents, while the main union leaders took the floor from the monument in the center of the compound. (I)
