Turkey will close the passage through the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles to warships of Russia and Ukraine. Ankara is acting in accordance with the Montreux Convention, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on CNN Turk, Cumhuriyet reports.
According to him, an exception for the ships will be the return to the port of the main mooring.
Cavusoglu said that Turkey will apply the provisions of the convention in relation to the parties to the conflict. Article 19 of the convention provides that in time of war, when Turkey is not a belligerent, warships of the belligerents may not pass through the straits.
Ankara made the decision against the background of the special operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine.
Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
