EU foreign ministers agreed on new sanctions against Russia. This was announced by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.

The package of approved measures includes sanctions against Russian businessmen and officials, the closure of EU airspace to Russia, and the disconnection of “certain banks” from SWIFT. The European Union also agreed to ban the broadcasting of RT and Sputnik.

“We are excluding a certain number of Russian banks from SWIFT,” Borrell said. Also, according to him, it was decided to ban Russian aircraft from traveling in the airspace of the European Union. In addition, the EU will fight disinformation, so it will ban Russia Today and Sputnik from broadcasting in the union.

The EU decision on sanctions must be published in the Official Journal of the EU, after which it will enter into force. Measures are being taken against the backdrop of a special operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine.

Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
