The first two days of the carnival in Cuenca were marked by two aspects: the joy of the parade of the four rivers and the rain that fell intensely in different areas. They were not heavy rains, but intense ones that limited some planned activities but not the joy of the morlacos.

The Four Rivers Carnival had 52 direct participants, including troupes, allegorical cars and town bands.

Everyone gathered on the morning of Saturday, February 26, in the central Bolívar street, taking advantage of the fact that the Cuencan sky opened for a few moments and allowed moments of fellowship for the people who came to this place or stopped their activities to enjoy of the event.

The organizers, Amistad Club and the Union of Journalists of Azuay (UPA), appointed several local personalities to lead the parade.

Four were chosen and each one of them generated a feeling of joy. For example, the lawyer influencer Nicolás Muñoz wrote on his Twitter account: “This is one of the greatest honors I have had in life, to be named compadre of the Cuenca carnival. Always proud of my culture and traditions, this is the time of year when you can feel the most joy in Ecuador”.

Regarding hotel occupancy, the president of the Azuay Chamber of Tourism, Juan Pablo Vanegas, said that 50% was registered on Saturday, a figure that is important but could be better if it had not been for the problems on the roads of the province, particularly, of those that connect Guayas and Azuay, through which more visitors arrive.

What did please and help the sector is the reduction of four points in the value added tax (VAT) for the services they offer, but he insisted that the Government should help them more with credits that improve their situation hit by the pandemic and poor roads.

The Molleturo-El Empalme route was closed at kilometer 71, according to information from the Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP), due to landslides.

This coincided with the 40-day closure announced for this route by the MTOP so that they can “remove rocky material in the upper part of the slope (kilometer 49)”, considered another critical point in this sector. (I)
