The UN is seriously concerned about the events in Ukraine and is receiving more and more reports of civilian casualties. Raveena Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said civilians fear a further escalation and are fleeing their homes.

The UN High Commissioner believes that the actions of the Russian Federation clearly violate the norms of international law and must stop immediately.

The High Commissioner stressed that States that do not take all reasonable steps to resolve their international disputes peacefully are in violation of their obligation to protect the right to life.

“We are also alarmed by the numerous arbitrary arrests of anti-war protesters that took place yesterday in Russia. We estimate that more than 1,800 protesters were arrested,” the spokesman for the UN High Commissioner said in a statement. — The arrest of persons exercising their right to freedom of expression or peaceful assembly constitutes arbitrary deprivation of liberty. We call on the authorities to immediately release all those who have been arbitrarily detained for exercising these rights.”

Earlier, NATO countries condemned the military operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine and called on it to stop hostilities. The alliance demanded that the Russian authorities “immediately withdraw all their forces” from the territory of Ukraine.

In addition, the NATO leadership has put in place defensive plans to “respond to emergencies” and promised to continue to support Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin in his morning speech on February 24 announced the start of a special military operation to “demilitarize and denazify” Ukraine.
