NATO and EU countries condemned Russia’s “full-scale invasion” of Ukraine and held Moscow fully responsible for the conflict.
The alliance called what is happening a threat to Euro-Atlantic security.
“This is a long-planned, brutal, unjustified attack on Ukraine, an independent, peaceful and democratic country,” the summit participants said in a statement.
NATO representatives noted that “the world will hold Russia and Belarus accountable for their actions.”
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO would deploy thousands of military personnel, more than 100 aircraft and over 120 ships in the east of the alliance.
“We reaffirm our strong support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders,” the organization said.
Stoltenberg added that NATO members can provide Ukraine with air defense systems.
“Putin’s decision to attack Ukraine is a monstrous strategic mistake that will cost Russia dearly economically and politically,” NATO and the EU said in a statement. The countries also stressed that “Moscow’s actions were a flagrant rejection of the principles in the Russia-NATO Founding Act.
