Petersburg doctors were the first in Russia to start using a new method of treating Parkinson’s disease. This was reported by the press service of the city health committee.

According to the method, a gastrostomy is installed for the patient, through which the desired drug enters directly to the place of absorption – into the small intestine. This improves the quality of life of the patient.

“St. Petersburg has become the first region in Russia to apply the method on an ongoing basis and as part of compulsory medical insurance, and not as clinical trials,” the press service said.

The gastrostomy is installed by the doctors of the city hospital No. 40 of the Kurortny district: neurologists, endoscopists and surgeons. Through the gastrostomy, the drug is delivered directly to the site of absorption in the small intestine. The method significantly improves the quality of life of patients, allows them to become more independent and lead an independent lifestyle.

Recall that clinical trials of this method in St. Petersburg began more than ten years ago. Eight patients are being treated in the city in 2022 using the new technique. Four more people plan to use a gastrostomy in the spring.
