Ukraine has lost control over Zmiyiny Island in the Black Sea, TASS reports citing a message from the State Border Service of the country on its Facebook page.

The report says that the infrastructure of Zmeiny Island was destroyed after shelling by naval artillery. Communication with the border guards was also lost.

Snake Island is part of the Kiliya district of the Odessa region. It became part of Ukraine in accordance with the Paris Agreement of 1947, after the transfer of Bessarabia to the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the USSR, Serpentine was the subject of a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Romania.

Early Thursday morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia,” adding that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”
