The Japanese authorities are imposing new sanctions against Russia in connection with the start of a military operation in Ukraine, Kyodo reports, citing a statement by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
As part of the sanctions package, Japan will reportedly freeze the assets of Russian financial institutions and impose restrictions on the export of semiconductors and other goods to Russia. In addition, restrictive measures include the suspension of visas for some Russians. To whom, exactly, is not specified.
Kishida’s announcement came hours after G7 leaders denounced Russia and vowed to impose “strong and coordinated” economic and financial sanctions over the military operation in Ukraine.
New Zealand also announced the imposition of sanctions against the Russian Federation. The new package includes an entry ban for Russian officials and “a number of other citizens associated with the invasion”, as well as a ban on the export of Russian goods, which will affect “any enterprises, organizations and individuals associated with the military departments and security agencies of the Russian Federation” .
Early Thursday morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia,” adding that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”
