The Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón, confirmed that the manager of the Francisco de Icaza Bustamante Hospital, which is located in the south of Guayaquil, it was removed due to what it called an “irregular process.”
“When you carry out a purchasing process and you are given medicine, medical devices, the person in charge of that purchasing process and the hospital manager are the people responsible, that is why the manager was immediately removed”, he said in reference to medicines that would have been about to expire.
The departure of the manager occurs after learning about the purchase of drugs for oncological treatments at the Children’s Hospital that were going to expire in May 2022. In total there were 210 units.
The proximity of the expiration of these drugs had apparently been alerted by the hospital manager to the zonal health coordination.
Garzón added that those medications were withdrawn immediately from the hospital and this week the oncology drugs arrive for the treatment of pediatric patients. A new manager was also appointed.

The case of the Children’s Hospital has sparked concern in the legislature, where some assembly members are trying to find out details of this process.
