US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken canceled a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. According to Reuters, Blinken announced the cancellation of the meeting during a joint press conference with Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Kuleba.
According to him, the meeting, scheduled for February 24, was to take place on the condition that “Russia refuses to invade Ukraine.”
“Now that we see that the invasion is beginning, and Russia has made it clear that it is completely abandoning diplomacy, there is no point in holding this meeting at the present time,” the Secretary of State emphasized, adding that he had sent a letter to Lavrov notifying him of his decision.
According to him, the decision was made “after discussion with Washington’s partners.”
Recall, on Monday, February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics. The Russian authorities also signed treaties of friendship and cooperation with the DNR and LNR. Later they were ratified by the State Duma and the Federation Council, as well as the parliaments of the DPR and LPR.
