UN Secretary General António Guterres refused to consider the Russian military, who may enter the Donbass, as peacekeepers.

Speaking to reporters, Guterres stressed that “when the troops of one country enter the territory of another country without its consent, they are not impartial peacekeepers. They are not peacekeepers at all.”

He also stated that the decision of the Russian Federation to recognize the independence of the DPR and LPR was “a death blow to the Minsk agreements approved by the Security Council” and “a violation of the integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.”

Guterres spoke about the risk of further escalation of the situation in the region and called on the parties to “return to dialogue and negotiations.”

Recall, on Monday, February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics. The Russian authorities also signed treaties of friendship and cooperation with the DNR and LNR. Later they were ratified by the State Duma and the Federation Council, as well as the parliaments of the DPR and LPR.

In turn, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky allowed a break in diplomatic relations with Russia, noting that such a request had already been received from the Foreign Ministry.
