The summit of the presidents of the United States and Russia is possible only against the backdrop of de-escalation around Ukraine. This was stated at a briefing by White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.

“We will never completely close the door to diplomacy. But the success of diplomacy is impossible until Russia changes course,” she explained.

Psaki added that now Joe Biden has no plans to meet with Vladimir Putin. The talks were supposed to take place after the meeting of the foreign ministers, but the day before, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken canceled a meeting with Sergey Lavrov scheduled for February 24 against the backdrop of the situation in Donbass.

Recall that on February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the DPR and LPR, as well as agreements with their heads on friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding. On February 22, Putin received permission from the Federation Council to use the armed forces abroad. At the same time, the President of Ukraine announced the conscription of reservists for military service in connection with a “special period for the country.” The United States, Great Britain and the European Union imposed sanctions against Russia. Japan also joined them.
