The certification process for Nord Stream 2 has been suspended, said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“Today, I asked the Federal Ministry of Economics to revoke the report on energy security from the Federal Grid Agency… This is a necessary step so that the certification of the gas pipeline can no longer take place,” he said, reports Reuters.

After Russia recognizes the LPR and DPR, it is necessary to “reassess the situation,” and this also applies to Nord Stream 2, Scholz explained. He stressed that the West “will not be able to accept” the independence of the people’s republics of Donbass.

Earlier, the German regulator reported that they did not plan to make changes to the Nord Stream 2 certification process if Russia recognizes the DPR and LPR. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for a complete halt to the pipeline.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer also admitted that new EU sanctions against Russia would affect Nord Stream 2.

The pipeline certification procedure was suspended even earlier, as its operator was obliged to create a subsidiary in Germany and transfer asset management to it.
