Six neighborhoods in the city of Esmeraldas reported emergencies due to landslides and houses flooded by the heavy three-hour downpour, early Tuesday 22.
The calls for help were received by the Fire Department from 03:30 this Tuesday. The reports came from the Gatazo, Santas Vainas, Lucha de los Pobres, Valle Hermoso, San Rafael, and Olmedo and Muriel sectors.
The rains caused flooding in homes as a result of clogging of grids due to the dragging of materials, which forced the use of suction pumps and tools for evacuation.
The commander of the firefighters, Miguel Perea, reported that more than 50 troops moved to the affected sectors. No human losses were recorded, unlike material damage.
Puente de Girón collapsed due to the rains in the area
“We have evacuated several homes, putting families in safe areas, and the alert is maintained to attend to emergencies,” he emphasized.
On the southern entrance road of the city of Esmeraldas, mud was released from the hill and partially affected vehicular traffic.
Neighborhoods in the city of Atacames, in the south of the province, were also affected by the rains, as reported in the 18 de Febrero sector. Stagnant water was also recorded in educational units in this canton.
Heavy rains force the early closure of the Alóag-Santo Domingo and Calacalí-Río Blanco roads
The Fire Department recommends the inhabitants, especially those who live in low-lying areas, to take appropriate precautions and remain vigilant, given that the flow of the rivers continues to increase, Commander Perea said.
The rain resumed at around 09:00 and the firefighters monitor with the ECU911 the neighborhoods settled on the banks of the Teaone, Esmeraldas, San Mateo rivers and the Luis Vargas Torres and Luis Prado Viteri islands. (I)
