Assault rifles and clothing for military use were found by Armed Forces personnel during a surveillance and reconnaissance patrol in a jungle area on the northern border of Esmeraldas, this Monday, February 21.

The discovery was in the Matajillo sector, in the San Lorenzo del Pailón canton, where two M16 and Galil type rifles, caliber 5.56 mm, were found; four bags with controlled substances; a combat vest and two military uniforms, presumably from Colombia.

The operation was carried out by the Mataje Operational Unit with reinforcements from the Marine Corps. There were no people detained, reported the Joint Command of the Armed Forces.

The weapons and clothing were taken by the military to the San Lorenzo Infantry Battalion, for delivery to the National Police and judicial authorities of that border jurisdiction.

Earlier this month, two people (Cuajiboy H. and Campo J.) were arrested in San Lorenzo for the alleged crime of possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The operation was carried out in the sector known as Nuevo San Lorenzo.

Police agents found 2 submachine guns, 1 pistol, 330 5.56 rifle ammunition, 45 9mm ammunition, approximately 200 grams of controlled substances and four mobile phones.

murders in inquiry

The brothers Darwin, 39, and Judith Jimbo Cando, 30, were murdered in the La Cadena sector of the Mataje rural parish, on Wednesday the 16th.

From the preliminary investigations it was said that these two murders could be linked to the actions of an irregular armed group from Colombia that would be active in this sector of the border, as a measure to weaken the structure of the Oliver Sinistra Front, which in its moment was led by Walter Arízala, alias Guacho.

On January 27, a Colombian citizen, identified as Yeifran G., was arrested for possession of weapons, explosives and ammunition.

A submachine gun, a 9-millimeter pistol with their respective chargers, two hand grenades for military use, ammunition and three mobile phones were found on the apprehended person inside a vehicle.

These implements, it seems, were brought in from Colombia through an irregular passage in the Guadual Alto area (Mataje), in San Lorenzo. (I)
