Russian President Vladimir Putin informed French and German colleagues Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz that he intends to sign a decree recognizing the self-proclaimed LPR and DPR in the near future. This is stated in the message of the Kremlin.
During the conversation, the Russian President told his colleagues about the results of the extended meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, which considered the current situation around Donbass.
The Kremlin recalled that earlier today, appeals were received from the leadership of the DPR and LPR to recognize their sovereignty “in connection with the military aggression of the Ukrainian authorities.”
“In view of all this, the President of Russia said that he intended to sign a corresponding decree in the near future,” the press service added.
The President of France and the Federal Chancellor of Germany, for their part, expressed their disappointment with this development. At the same time, they add in the Kremlin, they indicated their readiness to continue contacts.
The press service of the German government stated that Olaf Scholz condemned Russia’s plans to recognize the self-proclaimed people’s republics. The Bundestag believes that this will contradict the Minsk agreements on the peaceful settlement of the conflict in the South-East of Ukraine and will be a unilateral rupture of these agreements by Russia.
According to Interfax, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, urged Moscow not to recognize the independence of the DPR and LPR and respect international law and the Minsk agreements. He added that he would offer to impose sanctions against Russia if it recognizes the independence of the DNR and LNR.
