Russia recognizes the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics from Ukraine. The corresponding decision was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin in an address to the Russians.

According to him, the situation in the Donbass has again become critical, so he decided not only to assess what is happening, but also to inform about further steps in this direction.

Earlier today, the head of state held an extraordinary large meeting of the Security Council, which discussed the issue of recognizing the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR.

Recall that last week the State Duma adopted and submitted to the Kremlin an appeal to the President of the Russian Federation with a call to recognize the DPR and LPR. Today, heads of the DPR and LPR Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik addressed the Russian leader with a request to recognize the independence of the people’s republics.

In turn, the first deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Alexander Kornienko, stressed that the recognition of the people’s republics by the Russian Federation would lead to worse consequences for Ukraine than the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia for Georgia in August 2008 after the military conflict with Russia.
