With its decision to recognize the independence of the LPR and DPR, the Russian authorities are pushing the world to the brink of a new world war, ex-President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said on Facebook.
In his message, Poroshenko wrote that Russian leader Vladimir Putin “chooses confrontation and finally destroys the international system of law and order established after the Cold War period.” According to him, “the Kremlin is pushing the world to the brink of a new world war, although its first addressee is Ukraine.”
Poroshenko also said that with his decision, Moscow “legalizes its long-term occupation of Ukrainian territory,” and added that the recognition of the independence of the LDNR “finally kills the Minsk agreements” and is a further escalation of the situation.
In addition, the ex-president of Ukraine called on international partners to impose sanctions against “the president of the Russian Federation and his entourage, all members of today’s meeting of the Russian Security Council, Russian oligarchs and deputies of both chambers of the Russian parliament.”
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the republics of Donbass. He also instructed the Russian military to ensure the maintenance of peace on the territory of the DNR and LNR.
