US President Joe Biden, in a conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky, promised a “quick and decisive response” to Russia’s recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, the press service of the White House reports.
Biden “reaffirmed the US commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity” and “strongly condemned Russian President Putin’s decision” to recognize the independence of “Ukraine’s regions,” according to a statement posted on the US administration’s website.
Biden also briefed the Ukrainian leader on the US response, “including a plan to impose sanctions,” and confirmed that the US “will respond quickly and decisively, in coordination with allies and partners, to further Russian aggression against Ukraine.”
Earlier, Zelensky said that he had discussed “the events of the last hours” with Biden.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the republics of Donbass. He also instructed the Russian military to ensure the maintenance of peace on the territory of the DNR and LNR.
