The White House refused to answer the question of whether the scheduled meeting between US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will take place after the decision on Russia’s recognition of the independence of the DPR and LPR.

As a representative of the American administration told reporters at a briefing, this question should be asked to the State Department, which “can provide more information on this topic.”

The White House spokesman also said that the US authorities “are not ready to promise a meeting” between President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin “in conditions where everything looks as if Russia” is ready to “invade” Ukraine. At the same time, the official stressed that the United States “is open to new contacts between the two leaders, if these contacts will have a beneficial effect on resolving the Ukrainian crisis.”

On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the republics of Donbass. He also instructed the Russian military to ensure the maintenance of peace on the territory of the DNR and LNR.
