The US Embassy in Russia has clarified the warning about the threat of terrorist attacks in Russian cities.

As RIA Novosti writes with reference to the press secretary of the diplomatic mission, Jason Rebholz, the statement was made for American citizens “in the interests of their safety.”

“We have issued the alert for security reasons and in line with our commitment to provide US citizens with clear and timely information so they can make informed decisions,” he said.

Earlier, the US Embassy warned its citizens that in Moscow, St. Petersburg and on the border with Ukraine there is a risk of “attacks on shopping centers, metro and railway stations.” The diplomats also urged the Americans to leave Russia if possible.

At the same time, it is not specified whether this information was received in Moscow through official channels.

Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov called this warning from the US Embassy “a very unusual practice.” According to him, the Kremlin is now investigating whether there were signals about this from the American intelligence services.

Earlier, former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul also considered the content of the US diplomatic mission’s warning “unusual”. He noted that he “cannot remember such a message ever appearing.”
