Municipality of Quito will allocate more than $4 million for the bicentennial of the Battle of Pichincha

This morning, at the Metropolitan Cultural Center of the Municipality of Quito, the presentation of the program of activities to be carried out in commemoration of the bicentennial of the battle of Pichincha, of May 24, 1822.

The budget intended for all events and works to be executed is $4,210,000. The authorities reported that the activities will take place from February to December.

The Secretary of Culture, Juan Martin Cueva, announced that the program will be divided into four important moments: the first, which was intended for the Proclamation of Sucre, was changed due to the pandemic. The second will be in May, the date of the Pichincha battle. The third will begin in August with the events of the month of the arts and the fourth moment will be in December with the closing of the bicentennial festivities.

Among the main activities planned for the month of May are a bicentennial cavalcade, that it will follow the path followed by the liberating army; the exposition Pichincha; urban intervention in the Plaza de Chillogallo and five massive events which will take place on May 24 in different sectors of the capital.

Jose Daniel Flores, coordinator of the Bicentennial Technical Unit, explained that the 47% of this budget ($ 1,978,700) will be used for contracting by public calls. That is to say, the Municipality will receive a series of projects and after their analysis the resources will be assigned.

Among these activities will be the creation of murals, recovery of stairways and viewpoints; artistic presentations, plays, and others.

In addition, one of the most important items will be the urban intervention in the creation of a comprehensive center for youth and childhood in the sectors of The Commune and La Gasca, affected by a flood on January 31. They will allocate $600,000 for this.

Flores also pointed out that on May 24 there will be five massive concerts on Bicentennial Night. A budget close to $300,000 will be allocated for these events and they will be held in Calderón, Cumbayá, the tribune of the Shyris, Quitumbe and Plaza San Francisco.

Angelica Aries, director of the Metropolitan Heritage Institute (IMP), announced that there will be a intervention from the axis of the Plaza 24 de Mayo to the Cima de la Libertad. They will also work in restoration of the Independence Monument, located in the Plaza de la Independencia, and 20 more monuments, related to the bicentennial, which are located in different parts of the city.
