Russia may introduce turnover fines for leakage of personal data. The idea is approved by the Ministry of Digital Development, Vedomosti reports.

“The existing penalties do not encourage operators to unconditionally comply with the requirements of legislation in the field of personal data, and therefore the introduction of turnover fines, in our opinion, will help reduce the number of incidents related to leaks of personal data (personal data),” said a representative of the Ministry of Digital Development.

The proposal to introduce turnover fines for personal data operators for their leaks was discussed on February 17 at a round table in the Federation Council on improving legislation in the field of personal data circulation, said Karen Ghazaryan, director of the Internet Research Institute. The information was confirmed by Aleksandra Orekhovich, Director for Legal Initiatives of the Internet Initiatives Development Fund. She recalled that the maximum fine for a company for leaking citizens’ personal data is 500,000 rubles.

Earlier it was reported that the two most popular online ways to take money from the population in 2021 were letters from scammers about lotteries and about the payment of any social benefits from the state.

Meanwhile, cybersecurity specialist Grigory Pashchenko believes that data on the state of bank accounts of Russians can get to attackers through microfinance organizations and online stores. According to the expert, large banks have recently tightened security controls and leaks are rare. He advised Russians not to provide their personal data to organizations that do not inspire confidence.
