Kazakhstan detained former Defense Minister Murat Bektanov, who was dismissed on January 19, 2022. It is reported by Interfax-Kazakhstan.
The ex-minister is accused of inaction during the January riots in the country, he was placed in a temporary detention center. A pre-trial investigation has been launched against the former minister under Art. 452 of the Criminal Code of the Republic.
Protests in Kazakhstan began immediately after the New Year, and one of the catalysts for discontent was a sharp increase in prices for automobile fuel – liquefied gas. Soon, economic demands were replaced by political ones, including the resignation of the government, the holding of new elections, consideration of the lustration of people from the “clan” of the former president of the republic, Nursultan Nazarbayev. The army was sent to suppress the protests, which grew into a spontaneous riot with pogroms. According to official figures, more than 220 people became victims of the riots, including 19 law enforcement and special agencies and the military, as well as three children.
