In St. Petersburg, the historian and archaeologist, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Leading Researcher of the Department of Slavic-Finnish Archeology of the Institute of the History of Material Culture (IIMK) of the Russian Academy of Sciences Sergey Beletsky died from the effects of coronavirus in the intensive care unit of St. George’s Hospital. He was 68 years old.
The death of the scientist is reported on the official website of the Institute of the History of Material Culture (IIMK) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Yabloko deputies from Pskov and Boris Vishnevsky also wrote about the sad news in their social networks.
Schlosberg noted the scientific work and merits of Beletsky, a graduate of the Faculty of History of the Department of Archeology of the Leningrad State University in 1976, as a researcher of the Pskov region, its history and archeology. In particular, Sergei Beletsky in 1980-1982 was the scientific secretary of the scientific seminar “Archaeology and history of Pskov and the Pskov land.” Both of his dissertations – candidate and doctoral – were related to archeology and the history of Pskov.
“A huge part of Sergey Beletsky’s life was spent on expeditions: in 1972-2004 (with interruptions) – field research of monuments of the Middle Ages and the New Age in Pskov and the Pskov region (in 1972-1992 – head of detachments, in 1980-1987 – head excavators, in 1998-2004 he was the head of the Pskov regional expedition of the IIMK RAS),” Shlosberg noted.
Boris Vishnevsky recalled that Sergei Beletsky defended the historical heritage of St. Petersburg: “Fought against the Gazprom tower, defended the Okhtinsky Cape.”
Sergey Beletsky from 2000 until the last days of his life was a member of the Academic Council of the IIMK RAS, and the Dissertation Council at the IIMK RAS.
