In Argentina, for the first time in history, they filed a lawsuit on behalf of animals – two dozen surviving jaguars from four regions of the country will sue the authorities. It is reported by Greenpeace.ru.

According to the organization, the rights of jaguars will be defended by employees of the Argentine branch of Greenpeace. The lawsuit alleges that the authorities of the areas of Gran Chaco, Salta, Formosa and Santiago del Estero do not comply with forest conservation laws and destroy the habitat of jaguars.

According to ecologists, in Argentina over the past two centuries, the habitat of spotted predators has decreased by 20 times. Despite the fact that their habitat is protected, local authorities do not disdain deforestation in order to turn the animals’ legal possessions into agricultural land.

Experts have calculated that about 40 thousand hectares of continuous forest are required for the survival of one individual. Lawyers for jaguars will demand that the authorities comply with environmental legislation and stop cutting down forest areas in which predators are “registered”.
