The daily incidence of coronavirus in St. Petersburg is almost twice as high as in Moscow: 16,595 against 9,705 new cases. At the same time, Smolny declares that collective immunity has been achieved at the level of 100%. Epidemiologist Anton Barchuk explained to a Rosbalt correspondent why, with so many vaccinated people, the epidemiological situation in the northern capital is not improving.
“Firstly, the officials made a reservation – immunity is not among 100% of the population, but 100% of the target has been achieved. And this figure is 80% of those vaccinated. At the same time, the St. Petersburg health committee said that they did not take into account those who had been ill – most likely, about 100%, colleagues still hit the target, ”said Barchuk.
The expert added that the serious difference between the number of cases in Moscow and St. Petersburg is due to the fact that the capital passed the peak earlier.
“That is, we are simply lagging behind Moscow at the peak, although we have also already passed it. Also, the number of cases now depends on the amount of testing,” Anton Barchuk emphasized. The epidemiologist noted that about 10-15% of residents over 18 years old before the start of the “omicron” wave lived without antibodies, and it was because of them that the number of hospitalizations increased.
The day before, the St. Petersburg Health Committee published a certificate stating that 712 people were hospitalized in a day. In total, 8,286 people are in hospitals with covid and pneumonia. 1412 infectious beds remain free. There are 142 thousand 643 patients on outpatient treatment.
Earlier, Rosbalt wrote that the chief sanitary doctor of St. Petersburg did not notice a high mortality rate against the backdrop of a pandemic.
