The story of a doctor who lost her husband in the flood of La Comuna

Abigail Mena and Luis Miguel Conza They met through a car accident. He crashed her vehicle and in the midst of her paperwork and arrangements, a love story was born. That incident was recorded in the sector near the Los Pinos funeral home, in the north of the capital. In the same place, Luis Miguel would be veiled fifteen years later, after losing his life in flood that devastated La Comuna and La Gasca.

Luis Miguel Conza -arrived from El Puyo, capital of Pastaza, located in the Amazon region- was one of the 23 members of the ecuavóley court They were dragged by the force of the water, mud and debris that came down José Berrutieta Street. His friends they knew him as the eyebrows and was characterized by going to the court every day. I was unemployed and he played as a flyer or player (positions of the ecuavóley).

“He said he came here to win something; to eat. He didn’t say how much he won or lost. She only told me when she was doing well. When she was doing badly he told me: ‘Today I lost, but it doesn’t matter, we’ll recover’́”, expresses his wife on the field of La Comuna, while asking his mother to take care of his one-year-old son to speak with THE UNIVERSE.

He remembers that on several occasions he only left Luis Miguel on the court, because she had to take care of her children again: Nicolás, 9 years old, and Christopher, one.

Abigail doesn’t forget the last conversation with her husband and is overcome with tears. “When she left the house she told me: ‘My love, today I’m going to be late because I have Pico y Placa (vehicle restriction in Quito) and I’m going to be late.’ It was the last I heard of him, since then, I didn’t see him anymore, never came, never came back.

On the night of January 31, he learned of the flood on the news. She tried to contact her husband, but she did not answer him. She called her brother and went out with him, with the hoping to find some trace; however, they only found a devastated area and no sign of Luis Miguel.

After touring the hospitals, they headed to the morgue. At 02:00 on Tuesday, February 1, they confirmed that her husband was one of the deadly victims of the flood. His remains were there.

On Wednesday they managed to remove the body. All funeral and niche expenses were paid with a loan from a relative.

After saying goodbye to her husband, Abigail started looking for her vehicle. “We had an Aveo, that appears (being dragged) in the news and social networks…, now I need the car to take my children to the consultations I have (she is a doctor) when someone calls me (for attention) at home, because I am also unemployed”, she expresses while sighing with her gaze fixed on the field. She was alone, in charge of their two children. (I)
