Rains cause damage in the parish of El Carmen

The storm caused the overflow of the Maicito River in the rural parish of Wilfrido Loor Moreira (Maicito), in the canton of El Carmen, Manabí, on the night of this Tuesday, February 15.

The growth of the flow of said tributary also caused flooding in several sectors of the urban area.

The surprising overflow of the river affected an educational institution and 20 homes, whose inhabitants were able to put themselves in a safe place; however, several items were affected by the water and there was a loss of chickens and pigs, said Liria Moreira, president of the parish council.

Together they warn that the Carrizal-Chone system would not irrigate even 50% of the hectares of phase 1 crops

The rain was intense, it began at 3:00 p.m. and lasted almost five hours.

To prevent future flooding, the leader estimated that gabion walls should be placed, under a technical study in coordination with the Manabí Prefecture. “We have previously requested this requirement,” she said.

The mayor in charge of El Carmen, Tania Mendoza, immediately arranged for personnel from the Fire Department to travel to the parish to help those affected by the flood. Other organisms also moved to the flooded area.

The head of the local Fire Department, Henry Álava Loor, said that for good luck the level of the river dropped in a short time.

This Wednesday the 16th, several members of the cantonal Emergency Operations Committee (COE) arrived at the parish, with the aim of evaluating the situation and taking the necessary measures. (I)
