The European Union will be able to cope with the partial cessation of gas imports from Russia. This is reported by Reuters with reference to the words of the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
According to von der Leyen, the European models used by the EU in the event of disruptions or reductions in supplies from Gazprom demonstrate the safety of the situation. She also stressed that the EU has already discussed alternative supplies with countries such as the US, Egypt, Qatar, South Korea, Nigeria and Azerbaijan.
Earlier, the European Commission accused the Kremlin of “gas blackmail”, and called Gazprom’s behavior strange. Von der Leyen said the Kremlin continues to use gas supplies as a means of exerting political pressure. According to her, this is also evidenced by the behavior of the Gazprom monopoly, which is not interested in increasing gas supplies to Europe, despite the huge demand and record prices for fuel.
Note that Russia supplies about 40% of fuel to the EU. However, as tensions escalate between the West and Moscow over Ukraine, concerns have grown over Russian gas exports to Europe, and prices have soared to record levels.
