Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his desire to hold telephone conversations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on the subject of a trilateral meeting in Ankara of the presidents of Russia, Ukraine and Turkey. This is reported by the channel CNN Turk.
Erdogan recalled that Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky had previously spoken positively about the trilateral talks, so if Putin also does not mind, the meeting could be arranged in Ankara or Istanbul. Erdogan plans to discuss the details of these negotiations with Putin by phone.
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Russia is not against Ankara’s participation in negotiations with Ukraine, but discussions of a potential meeting continue. According to him, Ukraine reacted positively to Turkey’s initiative to hold talks. As for Moscow, it, according to the minister, “does not close the doors.”
Cavusoglu noted that it was now Turkey’s turn to receive the Russian leader, and stated that they had already asked Vladimir Putin to name the date of arrival. The Foreign Minister also recalled that it is important for his state to maintain good relations with the Russian side.
On February 8, the press secretary of the Russian leader, Dmitry Peskov, said that Vladimir Putin was ready to meet with anyone, just to cut the “Gordian knot” of the conflict with Ukraine.
