Russian President Vladimir Putin will not agree to the recognition of the independence of the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR, the second president of Ukraine, the former head of the Ukrainian delegation at the talks in the trilateral contact group, Leonid Kuchma, believes.
According to Interfax-Ukraine, Kuchma called Russia’s “strategic goal” the return of the unrecognized republics to Ukraine. In his opinion, “this is precisely what explains the constant mantras about the need to comply with the Minsk agreements.”
“Russia’s official renunciation of the Minsk agreements – and this, of course, would be the formal recognition of the independence of the “DNR” and “LNR” – would be a shot in its own foot,” Kuchma added, suggesting that “the formal annexation of certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine” will not take place in the near future.
The ex-president of Ukraine also added that “Putin can be accused of anything,” but “he is a very experienced person and will not go to such stupidity.”
At the same time, Kuchma regarded the appeal of the State Duma to Putin as a further escalation of the situation on the part of the Russian Federation. “All real decisions in Russia are made in the Kremlin and only in the Kremlin, so I would not pay too much attention to what the State Duma does or votes for,” he added.
Recall that on the eve of the State Duma adopted a draft appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin on recognizing the independence of the DPR and LPR.
