London will support Ukraine’s possible decision to refuse to join the North Atlantic Alliance. This was announced to Sky News by British Deputy Secretary of Defense James Hippie.
According to him, “if Ukraine decides that it will not become a member of NATO, we (in Britain – ed.) will support this,” however, “the decision should remain with the Ukrainian government,” RIA Novosti reports.
Recall that earlier in an interview with BBC Radio 5, Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK Vadim Prystaiko admitted that Kiev could “show flexibility” and abandon its plans to join the North Atlantic Alliance in order to “avoid a war” allegedly “prepared” by the Russian Federation. “If we have to make serious concessions, this is what we can do,” the diplomat hinted.
Meanwhile, in Kiev, they said that these words were “taken out of context.”
And later, as Lenta.ru notes, the diplomat himself explained his words about Kiev’s possible refusal to join NATO, making it clear that Ukraine is not reconsidering its ambitions to join the alliance, although it is ready to make concessions in order to avoid wars with Russia.
We also add that earlier, on January 20, US President Joe Biden said that Ukraine’s entry into NATO in the near future is unlikely.
