Ukraine’s official refusal to join the North Atlantic Alliance would contribute to the negotiations on security guarantees that Russia insists on, and would help to formulate a meaningful response to Russia’s concerns on this issue. This opinion was expressed to journalists today by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.

In his opinion, Ukraine’s recorded “renunciation of the idea of joining NATO” would significantly “contribute to the formulation of a more significant response to Russian concerns,” TASS reports.

Recall that earlier in an interview with BBC Radio 5, Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK Vadim Prystaiko admitted that Kiev could “show flexibility” and abandon its plans to join the North Atlantic Alliance in order to “avoid a war” allegedly “prepared” by the Russian Federation. “If we have to make serious concessions, this is what we can do,” the diplomat hinted.

Meanwhile, in Kiev, they said that these words were “taken out of context.” And later, the diplomat himself explained his words about Kiev’s possible abandonment of the course towards joining NATO, making it clear that Ukraine is not reconsidering its ambitions to join the alliance, although it is ready to make concessions in order to avoid a war with Russia.

Meanwhile, British Deputy Secretary of Defense James Hippie told Sky News that London would support Ukraine’s possible decision to refuse to join the North Atlantic Alliance. According to him, “if Ukraine decides that it will not become a member of NATO, we (in Britain – ed.) will support this,” however, “the decision should remain with the Ukrainian government,” RIA Novosti reports.

We also add that earlier, on January 20, US President Joe Biden said that Ukraine’s entry into NATO in the near future is unlikely.
