When discussing the Valieva case, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) did not consider the issue of changing the results of the figure skating team tournament at the Beijing Olympics.
“We were asked to determine the issue of temporary suspension (Valiyeva – Rosbalt). We did not consider questions on the results in the team competition. They will be considered under other procedures and
not necessarily in CAS format, ”SE quotes the words of CAS CEO Matthew Reeb.
He also noted that the temporary suspension of Valieva would lead to “substantial damage.” “We proceeded from the principles of fairness and a balance of interests between athletes and spectators,” Reeb said. “We emphasized that there were serious questions about the late reporting of results for the test, which was conducted in 2021. There are some legal issues that are not the fault of the athlete.”
The head of the CAS also recalled that Kamila Valieva is a “protected person” because she is not yet 16 years old.
The court panel of the Court of Arbitration for Sport today announced its decision, which did not satisfy the appeals of the IOC, WADA and ISU, allowing Valiyeva to participate in the women’s singles tournament of the Olympics.
