Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has hinted at the possibility of Budapest leaving the European Union. The chairman of the right-wing populist party FIDES – Hungarian Civil Union made a corresponding statement in an address to the nation, launching a campaign for re-election as head of the Cabinet, Deutsche Welle reports, citing AFP.

According to Orban, the EU is waging a “holy war, jihad” under the slogan of the rule of law. The Prime Minister demanded that Brussels show “tolerance” towards Hungary. Otherwise, it will be impossible to follow a common path, the Hungarian prime minister said.

In the coming days, the EU Court of Justice is to rule on a new EU rule of law mechanism in response to claims from Hungary and Poland. These countries dispute a mechanism to cut payments from the EU budget.

Now the European Commission can reduce the issuance of funds from the joint budget to those countries in which there is a threat of misuse of money due to violations of the rule of law of the European Union.
