Doug Ford, head of the government of the Canadian province of Ontario, has declared a state of emergency in the region due to truckers protesting against coronavirus restrictions. It is reported by the CBC.

Ford made the announcement Friday morning as truck protesters continued to blockade downtown Ottawa and part of the Ambassador Bridge. In the meantime, more protests are expected in Queen’s Park in downtown Toronto, forcing police to block several nearby roads.

In addition to the state of emergency, the Ontario authorities have introduced a fine for blocking highways, and especially malicious violators face up to a year in prison.

Earlier in Ottawa, in addition to the state of emergency already introduced in the city, it was forbidden for drivers opposed to covid restrictions to honk. The mayor of the capital of Canada, Jim Watson, said that the introduced regime shows “the seriousness of the threat to the safety of citizens.”

Watson acknowledged that the situation with the protests was out of control. Several thousand truckers, dissatisfied with the restrictions imposed since January 15, occupy the city center, interfere with traffic and constantly buzz.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau not only did not relax coronavirus restrictions, but also called the protesters a “marginal minority”.
