Reuters: US and EU changed their minds about disconnecting Russia from SWIFT

The United States and the European Union refused to include in the package of sanctions against Russia disconnection from the interbank payment system SWIFT. It is reported by Reuters.

According to the source of the agency, this measure was no longer considered after the objections of European countries, which indicated that disconnecting the Russian Federation from SWIFT “would not benefit anyone.”

Most likely, in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, sanctions will be imposed against large Russian banks such as VTB and Sberbank, as well as a number of oligarchs. In addition, the West intends to limit Russian exports in the field of defense and technology.

The source explained that the goal of the EU and the States was to prepare restrictive measures that “hit Russia, but at the same time monitor the risks so that these measures do not hit Europe harder.”

Recall that back in November 2021, the world media was filled with the topic of the alleged Russian invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions that should follow. Among the likely measures were both the shutdown of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, as well as restrictions against Russian energy companies and the shutdown of the SWIFT system.
