Esmeraldas says goodbye to Álex Quiñónez with a street of honor in the stadium

A street of honor and with raised white balloons received the coffin with the remains of Álex Quiñónez on Sunday afternoon. A burning chapel was installed inside the soccer field at Folke Anderson Stadium.

Dozens of citizens took up positions in the stands of the stadium to say their last goodbye to the athlete, who was murdered on Monday night in the northwest of Guayaquil.

Before being transferred to the stadium, the remains were veiled in Paraiso and Esmeraldas streets of the Unión and Progreso neighborhood, in the Las Guacharacas sector.

A caravan of more than twenty vehicles escorted the coffin of the athlete Álex Quiñónez. The sprinter’s remains, which were transferred by a funeral company in Guayaquil, arrived around midnight on Saturday in Esmeraldas, his homeland.

The funeral procession was received at the San Mateo control by Olympic medalist Jefferson Pérez; Governor Tania Obando, and Pablo Velasco, commander of the Subzone 8 National Police.

From there, two motorcycles escorted the caravan to the residence of the sprinter’s mother, in the Las Guacharacas sector.

The body of the athlete was scheduled to be buried next to the grave of the hero Luis Vargas Torres, in the municipal cemetery of Esmeraldas (I)
