The European Union is considering the possibility of adding Russia, along with Bermuda, the Virgin Islands and Israel, to the so-called “grey” list of tax jurisdictions. It is reported by EUobserver.
According to the publication, the list as a whole will expand from 15 to 25 countries, and its approval is scheduled for February 24.
In addition to the “gray”, the EU also has a “black” list, which includes states that refuse to cooperate with the EU on tax issues. It is expected that this month it will remain unchanged.
As for the list of “gray” jurisdictions, it includes countries that do not fulfill their obligations under tax reforms. At present, it neighbors Malaysia, North Macedonia, Qatar, Seychelles, Barbados, Costa Rica, Jamaica and a number of other states.
As EUobserver recalls, last year the authors of the Pandora Archive uncovered 676 offshore companies registered in the Virgin Islands – this is the latest in a series of leaks that reveal the extent of global tax evasion. The second largest offshore company is Panama. It is already on the “black” list of the EU.
In December last year, the Office of the President of the Russian Federation for Combating Corruption was unable to use data on offshore officials, considering the relevant publications in the Pandora Archive to be “unstructured” and “fragmentary” information.
Recall that during the Pandora Papers investigation, about 600 journalists from 117 countries studied almost 12 million documents. The media published the collected information. The investigation reports that more than 30 former and current world leaders and more than 300 high-ranking government officials were involved in offshore financial transactions. In particular, the investigation involves persons who, according to the authors of the materials, are in the inner circle of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Later, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters that the Kremlin had received and was considering an appeal from Novaya Gazeta regarding the Pandora Archive. According to Peskov, one of the departments of the presidential administration is “already working” on this appeal.
