Film director and member of the Council under the President of the Russian Federation for the development of civil society and human rights Alexander Sokurov sent an urgent appeal to Governor Alexander Beglov demanding not to demolish the building of the All-Russian Research Institute of Paper (VNIIB). The appeal was published in the group of defenders of the building on VKontakte.

“Dear Alexander Dmitrievich! I draw your attention to the fact that, contrary to our agreements with you, the demolition of the building of the All-Russian Research Institute of the Pulp and Paper Industry (2nd Murinsky Prospekt, 49) is starting. We, city defenders, consider this unacceptable and hope that you will prevent the demolition of this building,” the director said.

City defenders say that today the VNIIB building has equipment. Activists reacted by calling to go to the building and prevent any work from starting.

As it became known on February 8, the State Construction Supervision Authority, according to the developers, extended 27 expired building permits in St. Petersburg, including the construction of an apartment building at 2nd Murinsky Prospekt, 49, letter A. documents and extended the building permit.

The city defenders recall that they challenged the building permit in the Kuibyshevsky District Court. In the spring of 2021, the case was dropped as the permit had expired. But with the termination of the case, interim measures were also removed, prohibiting any actions with the building. That is, as the city defenders say, now VNIIB is defenseless.

Twice the City Court supported activists who demanded that the KGIOP include the building in the register of newly identified objects of cultural heritage, but VNIIB still does not have such a status.

The VNIIB building was built in the spirit of Stalinist neoclassicism. The owner of the building is the Specialized Developer 2nd Murinsky, which is part of the FSK holding. Activists believe that the building could well accommodate a children’s art school.
